Our nighttime routines consist of reading one book after another, and my two year old insists on "reading" one book to me. My 5 year old has started to read pretty early and enjoys reading almost anything he can. After he graduated from preschool in May, we were unsure what to get him for a graduation gift. In Toys R Us, we saw the Leapfrog Tag and he decided himself that this was the present he wanted.
The Leapfrog Tag is an electronic toy that looks like a pen and is able to read books designed especially for the Tag. Easily held in a child's hand, the Tag will read the book either by itself or will read each word as the tip of the Tag moves over the text in the book. My 5 year old loves it because he is able to read the book himself and use the Tag when he gets to a word that he doesn't know. Additionally, for each book the Tag has games and activities that center around the character and focus on building skills such as reading comprehension. Something else that I really liked about that Tag is that the available books include current characters that the kids know and love like Kung Fu Panda, Cars, Dora and Diego, Fancy Nancy and more. For my son, the fact that he could read Kung Fu Panda on his own motivates him to use his Tag often.
The Tag doesn't only read books! Leapfrog has also put together National Geographic Kids Activity Cards that work with the Tag to teach kids about all different animals. The cards are neat - they are bound together on top so they will not be strewn all over the house. The children can touch the card in different places with the Tag to learn quick facts such as animal classification and whether or not the animal is endangered, vocabulary words and hear sounds of the different animals. We were able to test out the Land Animals cards and even my 2 year old enjoyed hearing the sounds of the animals and learning their names. My 5 year old was excited to learn that zebras live in Africa and that kangaroos stay up all night.
We highly recommend the Leapfrog Tag for kids ages 4 - 8. The books seem like they would be more of a hit with the younger crowd while the older kids would probably enjoy the animal cards more. Leapfrog has also put together gift packs and starter kits which are great gifs.

It is basically a piece of cardboard and looks a bit homemade so it is hard to tell how long it will hold up to a lot of use. Because of its size, we think it is a great travel item!

A similar concept where kids receive a stuffed animal that has a code to be used for an online interactive site. The neat thing with Skoodlez is that it encourages reading and creativity because kids get to create stories. After your child registers their animal, their animal travels through a maigc machine and the child gets to build a story for thier animal. Kids can also print out their stories or visit the funhouse for more games and acitivities.
Parents interested in a Valentine's Day "stay at-home date night" after the kids have gone to bed should know about Stop & Kiss: A Card Game for Couples, which I created. My two year old daughter was able to play it, as were my six year old son and my husband, none of whom have any musical training whatsoever. Me (and my 14 years of piano and 10 years of violin lessons) as well as a friend whose in a pretty cool band, were all able to play Wii Music and have fun. Pretty much no skills are necessary, but if you got 'em, use 'em. There's a great tutorial that teaches you how to hold the contoller and nunchuck to play the different instruments (there are 60 of them) and you go through the motions of actually playing the instrument. You can create and play with your miis, play with friends or alone, record your music and make videos. If you have the balance board from Wii Fit, you can set it up and use it as a drum set, also pretty cool. The kids will recognize the songs like "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" as opposed to mainly radio songs. All in all, a super creative game, and if you get into thinking about the making of video games, you realize that whoever thought up this whole idea is pretty freakin' cool!
However, heed this warning - if you consider yourself a "gamer" and are competitive with your video games, this is not a game for you. Why? Pretty much because there's no actual game. There's no beginning, there's no end, there's no score, there's no beat the evil guy and get to the next level. There's play the music, play the different instruments and see what you can do with it. Don't get me wrong, Wii Music has gotten some pretty awful reviews, which is certainly not where I'm going. It's fun. It's great to play with your kids and let them experiment. You're not though going to sit for hours upon hours as you can do with games like Guitar Hero or Lego Batman (don't have it, I've just heard).

The packaging of this game is wonderful and provides kids with a mission code that allows them access to their online missions. This trading card game keeps kids minds stimulated through an eco-adventure that gives them the opportunity to learn about China's ecosystems and the endangered species. It takes a little time to learn the game but kids will be hooked once they have grasped the concept.

It is impossible not to love these! They are hip and fun and so useful. We only wish we still had babies in the house so we could hang onto them. They worked well with our toddler testers but it was the moms that loved them. They are a little pricey but durable so they will last.

We thought carefully about every feature while we were designing our cup. The most important issue of all was safety. So it's not surprising that the first thing people ask us is, "How come the cap is plastic?" The answer is simple: No child (or adult, for that matter) wants to suck on a stainless steel straw. It hurts our teeth just thinking about it.
We did the next best thing. We kept contact between water and plastic to a minimum, and we insisted that all our plastics be certified free of Bisphenol A, phthalates and DEHA. We pay for extensive independent laboratory testing on our cups to make sure they are free of these chemicals. Lastly, we make our cap out of Polypropylene, #5 plastic. PP is the most stable of all plastics.
We also took into consideration the fun stuff, like hands - little hands, messy hands, hands that can't quite hold onto big things yet; the developing mouths and speech abilities of growing infants; children's desire to look at bright, colorful objects; children's propensity for turning food delivery systems into projectiles...and other stuff as well.

Their products are always great and it is amazing that they keep coming up with new ways to make art supplies even more exicting. Their latest and greatest include their Painit Brush Pens which our art mom tester thought could be useful in the classroom for teaching technique. It feels like a flexible paint pen and goes on lightly.
The True to Life pencils, crayons and pens were fun for the kids. The crayons did not impress any of us as much. The pencils however were great for shading and drawing for the budding artist. Last but not least were the Mix 'Ems which are color mixing markers. It is a fun idea because it creates multiple colors. It is a bit confusing with the packaging because you do not receive as many colors as you would assume looking at the packaging. We felt like you could probably purchase 12 regular markers and create the same effect.

The size works better for older kids and teens. The ability to store your skateboard on some of the styles is a nice feature and you cannot beat the prices!
Although the Eastsport Natural Collection totes were spacious, we were not impressed with the expensive price for such a basic bag. We know that often you pay more to go organic but there really were no unique features to these "natural" duffels and totes. They would work well as diaper bags or a catch-all bag for travelling.

The food kozy is interesting and is meant to replace plastic wrap - you simply fold the koz around your sandwich and then wash it off at night. The only negative is not having an insulated bag to keep the food cool. At $40, it is also an expenisve lunch kit.

We did not get a chance to test but we did think the men's bags were impressive and would be great for dads with the the styles ranging from messenger bags to duffles.

I made the mistake this summer of purchasing kids shirts with mosquito protection only to find out from other parents that the chemicals in the shirts cause cancer. Those shirts were tossed in the trash. Recently I discovered a much better alternative. Finally a natural way to keep mosquitos off our kids. Our mom testers were happy to see a product that was safe and chemical free to use on our kids. When our son was born, my husband made a major decision - NO BARNEY. EVER. The giant purple dinosaur made him cringe and he was afraid of spending the next 5+ years hearing "I love you, you love me..." As our son has grown, his musical tastes have changed, most recently prompting him to hand down his Wiggles CDs to his 2 year old sister, opting to keep more "grownup" music for himself, like High School Musical and various Disney soundtracks. ParentClick Back to School Product Reviews - Fall 2008 Our favorite for so many reasons! We loved that the wall calendar is dated on the academic year. We loved the way the monthly pages were set up with special places to note all your RSVP notes for events. (The only negative is that it is on every other month - would prefer monthly.) There is a great planning page for the following year. The color coding makes it easy to read the calendar (night/day, weekday/weekends). Our only real complaint is that it requires a lot of wall space but if you use it correctly, it will also help family life run smoother! The portable calendar is terrific because it is not dated so you can use it ongoing and fill it in as you need. It would be a useful tool for moms for tracking meetings, school events and more. As a mom, I like this shoe because it is easy for him to put on and the colors are dark enough that it doesn't show all of the dirt. As for my son, he absolutely loves these shoes because they are comfortable and very lightweight; he also claims that they help him run faster! He has been a year-round Croc-wearer for the last couple of years and these are the first tennis shoes we have found that he chooses to wear over his Crocs. My only disappoint with these shoes is that the largest size they come in is a size 5! My daughter, 6 years old loves these hot pink tennis shoes. They fit her well and they are easy to slip on and off. As a mom, I have always been a fan of Stride Rite. Their shoes cost a little more but they also last a little longer! More importantly, they have great support and cushioning.

Yummy...it is smooth and has great flavor and that is coming from someone who has always hated peanut butter. I would even eat spoonfuls of this out of the jar. Barney Butter is tasty for anyone but especially great for peanut-allergic kids who are allowed to eat almonds. Another positive is that it has more fiber and less saturated fat than peanut butter.

The kids enjoyed the sea salt and the moms chose the curry. The chipoltle tomato was interesting but we would not choose them again. These are higher in fat than what you normally experience with pretzels but they are... kosher, vegan & dairy free, wheat free, gluten free, and there are no trans fats!

I have labeled our pantry so that the kids know where to put the cereal, crackers, etc. I have labeled their dresser drawers so there is no longer confusion on where anything goes. The kids had me make them labels for the dividers in their binders. We have become label-happy! My only frustration is when you do text on 2 lines, the letters shrink down significantly. We did not try it but found that they even offer an iron-on tape so you can mark your kids clothes for camp and school. There is also a magnetic tape.
Although we though this little machine was great, we did a little research and read a few negative comments that you might want to review before you purchase to make sure that this is the right one for you.

The night before Thanksgiving, we sat down to play it together and we both were happy that it was a great game!
On the pro side, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa kept Aaron's interest for a significant amount of time (around 45 minutes), something that's proving to be pretty challenging for us with many video games - the level of frustration he encounters due to of not having all of the coordination necessary for many of the Wii games gives us usually about 10 minutes on a game before he decides he doesn't want to play anymore. Part of the reason he was into this game was because of the characters - he knew them all from the movies, online and all of the other paraphernalia that he has collected. All of his favorite characters were there - Marty, Alex, Gloria, Melman - and he loved being able to make them all do funny things - Alex could roar and do crazy jumps, Marty could run really fast and kick, Gloria could do a butt bounce (pretty funny to a 6 year old). The graphics on the game were awesome and Melman, who served mostly as the narrator, was pretty funny. Some of the humor might have gone over Aaron's head, but it was entertaining for me. Another plus is that you can play the game either alone or in multi-player mode, which allows you to play against others. Always fun in a game that involves racing, and of course, butt-bounces.
A review is not a review without some cons, but these aren't awful for sure. One thing that bothered me a little bit was that you weren't able to move on to another task without completing the first. Some of the tasks were a little bit confusing and although Aaron and I were playing it together, even I wasn't sure how to accomplish it. As the narrator, Melman was sometimes a little difficult to understand, and at some points in the game we lost him. We couldn't find him on the screen and wound up with our character wandering aimlessly around the desert, mostly because we didn't know what we were supposed to do. Some of the tasks were on the difficult side and we had trouble completing them - at one point I had to have my husband come in and get us through one of the tasks just so we could get to what came next.
All in all, I'm glad that we were able to be a part of this blog tour with Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa. Aaron and I have played numerous times since Thanksgiving, and it's something that is alot of fun for us to do together. If your child is the type who wants to play their video games on their own, I think that this would be a great game for the 8 - 12 year old range. Younger than that, it's a great game for parents and kids to play together.

The kids can take them when they are riding bikes in the neighborhood and it allows us to stay in touch. We love some of the new features on the latest style including the hands-free option. It is also great if you ski to give your kids one to put in their pocket when they are doing ski school. This way they can check in with you... of course, you may not want them checking in if they are being cared for. One of the things that impressed us most was the range however this really varies depending on whether there are lots of building or if you are in a mountain range. This all makes sense and is hard to disagree with because of the amount of plastic we use. The water bottles are very nice and would be great for travelling and camping trips. They come at a steep price though at $50. Although I know most of us want to do our part in helping the environment, I am not sure that this would be an ideal every day bottle with kids because of the size. It is also a bit heavy with the filteration system.
