My son, soon to be 8, was invited to try out for club soccer. We went to the try-out and he made the cuts for the team. He has been asked to join a club soccer team and although it was all explained to us, I'm just not sure. I know it's an amazing experience but it's also a HUGE commitment. I don't want him to burn out. We have explained everything to him and are not pushing him in any way - the choice is his. He said he wants to play but I just wonder if he is too young for this. Have any of you played club sports? If so, what are your thoughts and/or advice? Thanks!
We had a very scary experience yesterday (Friday, 10/24) at the Wal-Mart (Ontario Ave. in S. Corona). I had Girl Scout funds to deposit at the Banco Popular. Caringten had gotten frosting on her pants and when we walked in and I started speaking with the people working at the bank, she said "I'm going to run to the bathroom." Anyone who knows me, knows that I have NEVER let her go to the bathroom by herself but she was already off. I had the bathroom in my sight. She took a bit and just as I was going to make sure she was ok she came out and over to me. She was shaking and I kept asking her what was wrong (she had gotten in trouble just before we entered the store) and she told me nothing was wrong but she had something to tell me in the car. Long story short, she forgot and so did I until dinner time. This is what she said happened - a man came out of the men's restroom and said hi to her when she entered the restroom. She went into the stall to clean the frosting off of her pants. A few seconds later, she saw that same man enter the women's restroom and almost shut the door completely behind him. She said that she jumped up on the toilet so that he couldn't see her shoes. He asked if anyone was in there a few times and she didn't answer. A woman entered the restroom and the man left. Besides beating myself up for the last 12 hours, I notified Wal-Mart and they are going to review the security tapes to see if they can find anyone matching his description and they will call the police. I love all of your kids and don't want this to happen to anyone else! She couldn't remember what he was wearing but gave me a fairly good description - He was about six feet tall, mid-30's, caucasian, clean-shaven, a little heavy, had brown curly hair like the guy from Ratatouille and was wearing grey sneakers with yellow stripes. I don't know if anything will come out of this, but again, I just wanted to pass it along.

It's Christmas morning and your child was expecting a large box with a puppy jumping out of it. You have resisted the temptation to bring a new pup into the home on this hustle and bustle morning and opted instead for a box full of puppy toys and supplies and a gift certificate from the local Humane Society or city/county animal shelter toward the adoption of a new pet. Your child and you then spend quality time together after the holiday looking at all the animals available for adoption. It was better to wait a day or two to make the perfect selection of a pet than rush into a decision. Don't worry about whether you'll find the right one; you will. There are thousands of homeless pets looking for loving families everyday - from mutts to purebreds, large and small, young and old. As a nation, we claim to love cats and dogs. Millions of households have pets, and billions of dollars are spent yearly on pet supplies and food. But as a nation, we should take a hard, sobering look at a different annual statistic: the millions of dogs and cats given up to shelters or left to die on the streets. And the numbers tell only half the story. Every cat or dog who dies as a result of pet overpopulation-whether humanely in a shelter or by injury, disease or neglect-is an animal who, more often than not, would have made a wonderful companion, if given the chance. U.S. animal shelters euthanize 3 million to 4 million cats and dogs every year, yet pet industry statistics show that about one third of the nation's 11,000 pet stores continue to sell puppies. Many of these dogs come from puppy mills-mass commercial breeding operations that put profit above the health and welfare of the puppies and their parents.
A recent study by The Humane Society revealed that many consumers who buy dogs at pet stores, through newspaper ads, or over the Internet aren't aware of their pets' origins. It's only after the puppies are home and problems arise that people start to ask questions. Complaints filed over a 4 month period from buyers showed that most involved new puppies with serious illnesses, congenital defects, and severe behavior issues. About 20 percent of the puppies died within weeks of purchase because of these problems.

If you are looking for general ways to save money, I would first start with your grocery bill. Clip coupons and use www.thecouponmom.com to help you make the most of them. I rarely buy anything at the grocery store without a coupon to go with in. I can usually save about 40% per visit to the grocery store with coupons. Then I would look at some of your bills i.e. cell phone and insurance and contact the providers to see if there are any better offers, contracts or ways to reduce the bill. Also, call your credit card companies with whom you carry a balance and ask them to reduce the finance rate. Most will lower the APR but not department store credit cards. It may be better to balance transfer those department store balances over to 1 credit card with a low APR. Make sure they don't charge you a transaction fee to do the transfer. Tell them you want them to waive the transaction fee because other credit card companies will. Just some ideas to get you started. There are also some great coupons on this site under Local Perks.
