Have a Great Labor Day and Losing Your "Mom Card"

Michele Nissen, Publisher
09/02/2010

Yesterday after school, my kids jumped into the car and shouted with glee because they don't have school on Monday. Oh yes, Monday is a holiday. My son preceded to tell me that it's the Labor Day holiday and then he asked, "Mom, what is Labor Day and why do we celebrate it?" I quickly responded with "Uh, it's a day to celebrate the workforce". I think that was the moment that he revoked my "Mom Card". You all know what I'm talking about. The "Mom Card" is an unspoken professional designation that we all earn at our child's birth and it comes with expert knowledge in most anything your child will ask. Right? Just like the eyes on the back of your head which we all have to use at our discretion. When my kids ask me these questions, I usually have a good answer and a little history lesson to boot. But not yesterday...and so he said, "That's it?" I told him that I'd Google it and get back to him. He leaned over to his sister and whispered, "She doesn't know". Ugh.

Sometimes we are so delighted to have these holidays that we forget the historical significance. Here is what I learned so you don't get your Mom or Dad Card pulled too.
